Group issues recommendations to protect newborns from whooping cough
The
Global Pertussis Initiative says vaccinating pregnant women against
whooping cough, followed by immediate family members, caregivers and
other people who come in contact with infants, is the most effective way
to prevent newborns from contracting the infection. Dr. Bonnie
Maldonado, a member of the AAP committee on infectious diseases, said
that vaccinating pregnant mothers offers up to 90% protection and the
cocoon approach to inoculation offers 60% to 70% protection for infants
against whooping cough.
