Study: Comprehensive primary care helps cut health care costs
A
study in the Annals of Family Medicine found that patients seen by
family doctors who provided more comprehensive care services were 35%
less likely to be hospitalized and saw costs reduced by 10% to 15%,
compared with patients whose doctors tended to refer them to
specialists. "That is a huge bending of the cost curve," says Dr. Kevin
Grumbach, who wrote a companion commentary. "This probably trumps any
other innovation in terms of reducing Medicare costs."
